I have been active as an advisor/consultant and the principal of Tomas Öberg Konsult AB since 1990, specialising in environmental chemistry, risk analysis, and data analysis. I have done research and teaching in environmental risk analysis at the University of Kalmar since 2002, where I am also associate professor ("docent") of environmental chemistry since 2004.
I was a founding principal of the consulting company Bergström & Öberg 1995-1996 and Managing Director of MultiSimplex AB (publ.) 1997-2001. In this company, we developed and sold technical solutions and software for optimisation of processes, products and instruments.
Prior to setting up Tomas Öberg Konsult AB, I was Principal Administrative Officer with the County Administration of Blekinge, Project Manager and Senior Advisor/Consultant with Studsvik AB, a major R&D organisation, and Research Engineer with the Swedish Defence Research Agency. During this time I worked mainly with environmental issues both regarding technical solutions for pollution control and evaluation of health- and environmental effects.
As an environmental and process consultant, I have helped clients with optimising high-temperature processes, e.g. combustion and steel manufacturing, with regard to emissions of air pollutants. I have also provided health risk evaluations and environmental impact assessments regarding products of incomplete combustion, e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dioxins (PCDD) and dibensofurans (PCDF).
I am a specialist in the fields of hazardous waste, process optimisation and persistent organic pollutants (dioxins, PCBs, brominated and fluorinated compounds). I have authored or co-authored more than 40 scientific publications within these fields of expertise, and served as lecturer at numerous conferences and seminars. I have also been a principal lecturer on thirteen advanced international training programmes on Hazardous Waste Management.
