Abstract
The emission and chlorination pattern of polychlorinated dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF) from thermal processes shows close covariation with that of chlorinated benzenes and phenols. The covariation can be utilized to predict the emission levels of specific isomers.
Relations between different chlorinated aromatics have been evaluated in samples from various industrial activities. The two factors contributing to the variation between samples are the amount in the sample and the chlorination pattern.
Multivariate calibration models (PLS) can explain 80-90% of the variance in PCDD/PCDF from isomerspecific data for chlorinated benzenes and phenols.
